Joan performs a free concert on the steps of San Francisco's City Hall as her Christmas gift to the city. Joan is participating in the candlelight memorial march, following the November 27, 1978 assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk (killed by the former Supervisor Dan White). White was paroled in 1984 and committed suicide less than two years later.

This recording seems like a really important piece of music history. I believe this was professionally filmed as well, because at the beginning of "Amazing Grace", Joan says "The television part of this has to end exactly on the dot". I was not able to find any film available or any reference on the net.

The tape played really slow, so I spent a few days working on this doing pitch tests. I believe I've adjusted it to near perfection. This sounds SO GOOD now !!! I'm sure many Baez fans haven't heard this one. You'll enjoy it.

During this concert, Joan performs her first recorded song "Scarlet Ribbons" ~ recorded in 1958. After Joan performs "Blowin" in the Wind", she is joined by a choir and they sing through a collection of Christmas songs. Unfortunately "Holy Night" fades out early, missing the very end of the show. Joan also thanks Bill Graham for the sound.

The Choral Arts Society of Washington opens it’s 37th season with Philip Glass, Symphony No. 5 Requiem, Bardo and Nirmanakaya on November 11, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall.Guest conductor, Dante Anzolini conducts the symphony that was commissioned and conceived as a millennium celebration work for the Salzburg Festival in 1999.

Glass wrote that he conceived of the 12-movement symphony as a bridge between past and future, moving from death (Requiem) to an in-between state (the Buddhist Bardo) to enlightened rebirth (Nirmanakaya). The symphony’s text is drawn from a remarkable collection of sacred quotations, wisdoms and traditions, from mainstream religions and the beliefs of native peoples. Pulling from every major language and religion the text, compiled with The Very Reverend James Morton evolves from chaos to humanistic hopefulness spoken in a single language – English.

En los dos equipos me "suena mejor" así especialmente en el principal con las JBL L-100 Classic. En la descarga "original" bajo y batería están excesivamente presentes y "tapan"..... En cualquier caso según "gusto personal, equipo y sala" puede ir mejor la descarga "tal cual"... cuestión de probar... Dándole vueltas ahora mismo, igual una rebaja de solo 2 dBs en graves, +1 dB en agudos hubiera venido mejor... cada uno puede hacer las pruebas pertinentes....
Es "una matrix" de mesa de sonido y dos tomas "a pelo", en la proporción 60% mesa y 20% cada una de las dos tomas de audiencia. Una matrix bien montada / ajustada es una maravilla.....y el set list se aleja mucho del "sota, caballo, rey" tan habitual en muchísimas bandas "de relumbrón"

Tech Notes

FLACs were decoded to wave and SF 8.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave.  CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch all 3 sources.  Soundforge 8.0 was used to remove a line
buzz that ran throughout the SBD source. Wave L3 Ultramaximazer
used to perform compression.  Multitrack mixdown was performed
using CEP2.0.  This is a 60% SBD, 20% AUD1, 20% AUD2 mix.

Notes

Remaster done largely to utilize Waves L3 which I did not
have at my disposal back in 2005.  The drums ran extremely
hot on the SBD recording.  Wave L3 was able to best contain
the drum while increasing the volume on the rest of the mix.

I also was able to utilize MLP encoding for the six channels
of 24/96 high resolution audio for use with the DVD-Audio
version. I also did not have at my disposal back in 2005.

Disc 1 and disc 2 can be assembled seamlessly on longer media.

There was an audible line buzz running throughout the SBD
recording.  This was likely not going over the PA as the buzz
is not apparent on either of the AUD sources.  The SBD DAT
recording continued to run after the feed from the SBD had
ended and the buzz continued.  This leads me to concluded it
was a line feed problem.  Bad cable possibly?  Because the
recording continued after the music ended a perfect recording
of the buzz was recorded.  This allowed me to accurately
capture and then remove the noise throughout the recording
very accurately without disturbing the fidelity of the
recording.  This was done with Soundforge 8.0 using the
highest quality setting.

The 2 AUD tapes made that night were from similar locations
as you can hear the same 'cat calls', claps, etc. on both
recordings.  However the 2 recordings still blended well
together and had different and unique sound characteristics.

This is all circulates in the trading circuit but I am afraid this is not the whole show because there is no DJ outro
and track 4 is not the last track of the show. maybe one day we will have the whole thing surfacing somewhere. But for
now, enjoy this piece of jazz-rock history!
