Fleetwood Mac
Kulttuuritalo,
Helsinki, Finland
September 24,1969

FM? > Cassette > CDR > EAC > FLAC

This one is from a FM source (I think). There’s also other tape-sourced CDRs from
Fleetwood Mac in Helsinki with more tracks, but they’re much worse in quality. This
source is easily the best I’ve heard, some problems with the tape, but nothing serious.
The band is tight and Peter Green is stunning for instance on Got A Mind To Give Up
Living. Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer have their special moments, too.

The sound is very good from that period.

Setlist:
1. Homework
2. Man Of The World,
3. Like It This Way,
4. Only You,
5. I Believe My Time Ain't Long,
6. Stranger Blues,
7. Got A Mind To Give Up Living,
8. Oh Well,
9. Comin' Your Way,
10. Albatross,
11. Great Balls Of Fire

43 min (A- )

Peter Green - Guitar, Vocals
Jeremy Spencer - Guitar, Piano, Vocals
Danny Kirwan _ Guitar, Vocals
John McVie - Bass
Mick Fleetwood - Drums

Enjoy

Hola,

Note:

Fleetwood Mac was part of a triple bill: The Flock, Fleetwood Mac and The Grateful Dead on 1/30/70 and 1/31/70. The Dead famously got busted by the New Orleans cops in the night of February 1,
while Fleetwood Mac narrowly escaped by getting lost on the way to the hotel (although they were probably not the target anyway).
The Grateful Dead members (minus two) and hanger-on’s were released after a couple hours jailtime, but not before having to pay a huge amount of bail money.
So, the next day, a benefit concert was organized at the Warehouse and Fleetwood Mac agreed to open for the Dead once more, since they had a day off. The concert attracted a pretty large crowd through sheer word-of-mouth.

Supposedly, the drinking water was spiked with LSD by the Dead's notorious soundman/guru on all three occasions.

This document captures the group at the height of their powers and it has the added benefit of the band not being under any "recording stress", unlike the Boston shows from a couple days later.

The source material here may not be able to compete with a multi-track recording and there are various tape flaws, but it really is a jewel for the greatest part.

So here it is; for the first time all three sets together in correct order and everything newly remastered for an optimal listening experience.

PS (July 2020)

P.S.: Peter Green is a musical hero of mine, especially as a young adult his music resonated with me like nothing else. He had the best guitar tone ever, and played with the utmost intensity. I hope his soul has found peace.

P.P.S.: Avoid the Before The Beginning 3CD set (2019) on Columbia; it is a grab-bag of whatever bootleg stuff they could find with atrocious mastering and fake applause.

Hello,

Welcome back to the ninth in a series of releases from the ER Archives, the collection of an active '70s taper and trader who stepped away from collecting, leaving his tapes dormant until now. ER's collection contains previously uncirculated shows as well as upgrades to circulating tapes, both audience and soundboard. He used high-end tape decks and good tape, so his copies of even well-known shows have proven to be improvements.

This is one of the clearer '75 board tapes, and though it is wanting for more guitar in the mix at times, the rest of the band could not sound closer.

Once again carrying this tape over the finish line is our comrade MJK5510. Thanks to him for final polish and prepping.

And of course, thanks once again to the ER Archive for opening up the vault doors and sharing this recording with the fans. Feel free to let him know how you feel in the comments.

Notes:

Without question, a significant factor in what makes the Darkness tour Bruce's greatest in the minds of many is the series of live FM broadcasts he did from July to December 1978.

These sublime broadcasts reached listeners who had only heard tales of how good Bruce and the band were in concert and now they could hear it for themselves. Those who were already fans considered the Agora or Winterland wonderful gifts and surely hundreds if not thousands recorded them off the radio as they happened and played them again and again like the rest of us because they sounded so good. For an entire generation of fans, the Darkness tour broadcasts were the catalyst to deeper devotion, especially in Europe.

That's because those off-air recordings provided the source tapes for major bootleg releases like Piece De Resistance (9/19/78) and Live in the Promised Land (12/15/78). It has been suggested that as many as 50,000 copies were sold of the three-LP Piece. And there's a plausible, long-standing theory that Springsteen's fanbase in Europe was ignited by these bootlegs. Remember, in 1978 Springsteen didn't tour Europe (it would be another three years before that happened), and he played a mere four shows there in 1975. For fans starved for Springsteen in England, Italy, Sweden or Germany, the Darkness tour bootlegs confirmed the legend and expanded the base.

And while The Roxy, The Agora, Passaic and Winterland have become so iconic as to be treated as proper nouns, there were five radio broadcasts in 1978, not just four.  So why isn't The Fox another capitalized term in the Springsteeen Dictionary?

September 30, 1978, a mere 11 days after the Passaic broadcast blasted out of radios throughout the northeast, the E Street Band rolled into the Fox Theater in Atlanta for the first of two shows (rescheduled from July after Bruce came down with a throat infection) that marked the end of the first long leg of the Darkness tour. Night one was broadcast live across the southeast on 20 or so radio stations according to the indispensable Brucebase Wiki.

The best bootleg source to date, Same Old Played Out Scenes (Doberman), describes the recording problems in its liner notes: "major reception problems and resulting sound defects for most people recording [are] the principle [sic] reason why this concert has become something of a rarity on unofficial releases over the years as the sound quality was just not as good as the other [broadcasts]." So much so that the Atlanta show never even made it to bootleg vinyl, which is amazing when you consider how widely bootlegged the other four shows were.

Earlier this year, JEMS acquired several tapes from a kind and generous soul who, while not a collector, had a number of interesting recordings land in his lap back in the day. The tapes had not been played in more than three decades. In the box were two cassettes of the Atlanta show. As luck would have it, they weren't merely an upgrade of the broadcast but a pre-FM recording of the show dubbed from 15 IPS reels.

The sound quality of the pre-FM source is truly first rate, lacking the heavy compression of the over-the-air broadcast and boasting much wider stereo separation than any extant FM source. The pre-FM also corrects most of the speed issues with the previous bootlegs. And we do pick up some previously missing audio bits. These includes a few sentences spoken by Bruce before "Santa Claus" and, more significantly, the 40 or so seconds that were missing from the start of "Backstreets" plus some band member intros after that song. That being said, the cassettes were in less-than-ideal condition and required re-shelling and baking for playback. Experienced ears might pick up on very minor fluctuations (e.g. on the tape flips) that couldn't be corrected.

In short, what we do have sounds awesome. However, because it is Atlanta, we're still snake bit. The pre-FM source is missing the entire encore (presumably a lost third cassette, and yes, we've asked if it might be hiding behind dresser or something), needs a long patch (6+ minutes) from halfway through "Prove It All Night" through the start of "Racing in the Street" (we had hoped tape baking would fix this damaged part but it didn't), plus a tiny patch at the very end of "Because the Night."

But even that bad news has a silver lining, as JEMS also found--gathering dust in its own archive--a 7-1/2 IPS reel to reel of the full broadcast from WINZ-FM Miami that we feel is superior to what's found on Same Old Played Out Scenes, having a more natural, less processed and compressed sound. This new reel was used to patch the longer missing bits (e.g. the "Prove It" to "Racing" chunk noted above) in the pre-FM and provide the encore.

The only material flaw in the WINZ source are a few short (one second or less) dropouts in "Raise Your Hand" that, while unfortunate, aren't particularly annoying, they're just there. After experimenting with using SOPOS to patch the dropouts, we decided that the "repaired" version sounded worse than the original as the gaps are so short, the change in sources is jarring. So we've left "Raise Your Hand" from the WINZ tape intact, with dropouts, but also included an extra file of "Raise Your Hand" with no dropouts from Same Old Played Out Scenes. You can choose which you prefer.

The end result is not perfect, but it is 100% complete, for the first time ever, and it is the best-sounding Fox Theater recording by a wide margin, especially the 85% of the show that's now pre-FM, including the show's one-off cover of James Brown's "Night Train." Brown grew up in Georgia which would explain this inspired cover choice. Bruce and the band perform the instrumental complete with a James Brown-style intro and we can only presume what dance moves he gave the crowd during this one.

The fresh, azimuth-adjusted transfer of both sources was done last month and JEMS' longtime colleague Slowburn handled the patching and prepping which was a lot of work so kudos to him too. Samples provided. We hope you enjoy the latest in our on-going upgrade series.

So here is The Fox, finally ready to take it's rightful place in Springsteen bootleg history.

   Badlans 1978

Brucebase:
Radio broadcast and soundboard tapes - Probably one of the best all time concert recordings, this version from the Soundboard. Great version of Because The Night & Fire, and also includes what many consider to be the best versions of Racing In The Street and the best band Thunder Road ever! - Essential. Also broadcast live on the radio, and video footage is available. A short live excerpt from this show (Bruce’s band introduction during “Rosalita”) was officially - and exclusively - released on a promotion-only 7” flexidisc issued to subscribers of Austrian pop magazine “Rennbahn Express” in June 1981. Thanks to Lost in the Flood for that info. Following the show, Felipe Luciano of WBCN TV interviews Bruce for the News Centre Four TV show. Released on CD "Piece De Resistance" (GDR) & "Southside Bruce And The E Street Jukes" (SEA) and most recently as "Passaic Night" (CC) Both the soundcheck and concert now circulate on a average to poor quality DVD although a recently enhanced 2DVD version has been released which is worth getting. A 9-minute TV report by New York’s "Channel 4 News" including partial, pro-shot colour footage of three songs from this show ("Badlands", "Spirit In The Night" and "Born To Run") and a short interview also conducted backstage at the Capitol Theatre is circulating on fan-made DVD’s. A full copy of the programme can be downloaded HERE. (right click...save as )(6mb) Thanks Peter.

02. Im A Rocker (3:42)
03. Jungleland (10:32)
04. Born To Run (4:38)
05. Detroit Medley (12:13)

Notes:

This tape is already circulating as "Im A Rocker" by Ottawa Records (http://www.mv.com/ipusers/richbreton/d/titles/IAR_OR.htm) however, this can be considered a new version. Im A Rocker was sourced from a 5/6/7th generation tape, whereas this is directly from the original soundboard recording. It also contains the complete Detroit Medley, which fades out on Im A Rocker at 5:25. There were also several cuts to fit it on one CD - this is the full uncut recording. However, it is not without its flaws - there are several tape warps during the show, especially during Rosalita. Ive tried to make the skips as natural as possible to preserve the flow. This show contains one of the best Point Blanks Ive heard.

Notes:
This is a nice novelty show for any Bruce fan...very short but complete.
The gig took place at a small nightclub in downtown Lancaster called The Village, which still stands and operates today.  Bruce and the band had been
gearing up for what would become the monstrous 'Born In The USA' tour.  While there was no formal announcement of this gig, word spread that Bruce was
showing up for a brief "practice" show at The Village...and he did not let the 500 or so locals down.  The show is indeed short (33 minutes) but it is complete
and packs a nice punch.  The mix is a bit odd but the recording is pretty clean with some minor tape fluctuations here and there.  The real oddity here is that Max
Weinberg is playing a drum machine(!!!) and the synth (Danny F?) is quite loud in spots, which gives this show a cheesy sound at times.  While this critique might
sound like I'm trying to deter you from downloading this, I'm simply giving my humble opinion of what to expect...it's still a great nugget from mid-80's Bruce.

I recieved this show a few years back in a trade.  While I always enjoyed it, I found my original disc to be very slow.  So, for this torrent,  I took it upon myself
to correct the pitch using SoundForge 6.0, giving this a much-needed speed correction.

Hope everyone enjoys this one.

28 Jul 1978 - Jai Alai Fronton, Miami, FL, USA

Main 1: Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochran, Badlands, Night, Spirit in the Night, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Factory, The Promised Land, Prove It All Night, Racing in the Street, Thunder Road, Jungleland

Main 2: Paradise by the "C", Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis Presley, I Fought the Law by The Crickets, For You, Not Fade Away by Buddy Holly + Gloria by Them + She's the One, Growin' Up, Backstreets

Encore: Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), Born to Run, Because the Night, Quarter to Three by Gary "U.S." Bonds

[/b]
21 Apr 1981 - Palau Municipal d'Esports de Badalona, Barcalona, Spain. (Cagada, fue en Barcelona-Montjuic(

Main: Factory, Prove It All Night, Out in the Street, The Ties That Bind, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Independence Day, Who'll Stop the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Two Hearts, The Promised Land, This Land Is Your Land by Woody Guthrie, The River, Badlands, Thunder Road, Cadillac Ranch, Sherry Darling, Hungry Heart, Because the Night, You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch), Point Blank, Racing in the Street, Backstreets, Ramrod

Encore: Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), Born to Run, Detroit Medley, Rockin' All Over the World by John Fogerty

  Prove It All Night, 1978

Prove It All Night, Barcelona 2002.

Hey, ése soy yo y sólo te quiero a ti
No me envíes a casa de nuevo
No podría soportar mi soledad otra vez

Puedes esconderte bajo tus mantas
Y estudiar tu dolor

From the VPRO pre-FM (studio) tape.

It's a truly delightful listen. As well as adding a few more tracks which were not part of the TV broadcast it's practically commercial-release standard. The gig includes one of only a few post-Transcendental Blues reunions of Steve and Sharon Shannon on Steve's Last Ramble and The Galway Girl, together with an orchestral backing for The Boy Who Never Cried. Essential.

Sources: two unknown lineage Dolby B cassettes.

Transfer: Nakamichi Dragon (Dolby B decoded) > Macintosh with DigiDesign AudioMedia III card > Pro Tools > AIFF. FLAC files (level Cool created with xACT (sector boundaries verified). md5 file created with checkSUM+.

The first song and 2 minutes of the second song are from an "off-air" KFAT-FM recording, the rest is prebroadcast soundboard. Much better sound quality on the SBD but still listenable enough on the FM source.

As was the case during the summer months when Garrison Keeler took time off, the
Prairie Summer Concert Series would have a guest host which generally meant a full
performance.

On this week in 1986 Emmylou Harris was the guest host and played a full 90 minute
performance.

This is from a 1st generation copy I traded for in the 1980's and is excellent quality,
to my knowledge nothing from this show has been released.

Hello,

Audacity 1.3.11 > Peak Pro XT 5.2 (volume smoothing/edit) > xACT 1.71 > Flac

Transferred and uploaded by mjk5510 (October 2012)

This show has circulated under the following date: January 27, February 27,
February 28, February 1979 and March 1979.

This transfer comes from my 1st generation cassette I traded for in the
early-mid 80's via a Japanese trader. The date written on the tape sent to me
was 1979-03-02, 03-03.

It appears to be unconfirmed if this show came from only the March 3rd show or the March 2nd and 3rd show. I have listed it as March 2nd and 3rd due to the tape I received from the master.

There appear to be multiple versions circulating so hopefully this verified
lineage version will be an upgrade for some or a first copy for others who may
have missed any past versions.
I have not heard all versions circulating but this is excellent quality with
just a small touch of hiss between songs, it has a well balanced rich soundÉ

Linda really shines throughout as does her always excellent band, I'm not sure I've heard her in better voice or with this much passion.

Great set, great show...

TWO LIVE BROADCAST RECORDINGS FROM

Greek Theatre,L.A. 1980 & Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara, 1984
The most successful female music performer of the 1970s and early 1980s, Linda Ronstadt remains among the most respected and acclaimed interpreters of song to have made a name in the rock age.
Linda would grace every album she released with songs by masters of composition like Lowell George, Glenn Frey & Don Henley, Neil Young, The McGarrigle Sisters and other writers of quality.
when music changed in the late 1970s, Linda changed too and employed the songs of Elvis Costello and Warren Zevon - new kids in town, but ones whose compositional skill Linda recognised immediately.
In 1980 she even recorded the old Knickerbockers 1965 garage hit Lies, and made it sound like the raunchiest, rawest new wave anthemthis side of the first Blondie album.
By 1984 however Linda was inclined to look back, and not for her the cheesy synth-driven plastic pop of the day, which even some of those mentioned above were experimenting with.
Instead, Ronstadt went back to The Great American Songbook and released a trio of albums interpreting songs that in many cases had provided a lot of the true inspiration for the contemporary tunes she had previously performed.

Linda Ronstadt, Pacific Amphitheatre, Costa Mesa, CA, October 22, 1990

We continue our series with another recording we believe to be previously uncirculated, Mike’s favorite female artist Linda Ronstadt performing at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, a venue that become something of a home court late in his taping career. Millard recorded over two dozen shows there circa 1989-92 and, based on this recording and others, he seemed to be able to regularly procure tickets extremely close to the PA. On this night his seat was row CC, Seat 22.

The master cassette of this show was among those Rob obtained in his second meeting with Mike’s mom Lia. It was recorded on a Maxwell XL II-S 100 min cassette and transferred from that tape earlier this year. Mike recorded Linda on at least seven different occasions including a show at the Universal Amphitheatre ten days earlier. Both 1990 shows feature Aaron Neville with whom Ronstadt had a recent and massive hit with the single “Don’t Know Much” which went all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The quality of this recording is outstanding and incredibly up close. Mike must have been sitting directly in front of the PA, so much so that we’ve had to pull the bass back because the AKGs and Nak 550 were getting everything the bass cabinet was pouring out. While Linda had not done substantial touring in the late ‘80s, her voice in 1990 hasn’t lost anything and with a crack band, these performances sound every bit as good as those Mike recorded during Linda’s legendary Universal Amphitheatre stand in 1977. Samples provided. Linda is also endearingly chatty during the show and seems to be enjoying herself and a return to the material that made her famous. We also get great songs from the middle years, like the fantastic version of “I Can’t Let Go” from 1980’s Mad Love.

Notes:

LUTHER ALLISON & his band were recorded for Zap FM at "le Truck" in Lyon (France) and it's a pre FM recording.
For mixing the show, i've used band soundboard "sub-groups" outputs (drums - bass - guitar/keyboard - vocals) + ambiance mikes (Sennheiser)
mixed on-the-fly (headphones) with a TEAC 16 tracks desk onto a Sony TCD5M K7 tape recorder.
At that time, Luther Allison was living in France and gone on tour with excellent french musicians.

Line Up:
Luther Allison - guitar/vocals/harmonica
Franck Rabaste - guitar
Michel Carras - keyboards
Sulaiman Hakim - sax
Peter Giron - bass
Vincent Daune - drums

Enjoy it all LUTHER ALLISON fans !!!
