Snake-Oil Alert: Denon Sells ‘Audiophile’ Ethernet Cable for $500

Denon is hawking an ethernet cable for an astonishing $500. How can the company possibly justify this quite ludicrous markup on what is essentially a tube for shifting ones and noughts across the network? As you might have guessed, it’s because the “ultra premium Denon Link cable was designed for the audio enthusiast“. [Emphasis added]

This, we presume, is the same audio enthusiast who might buy Monster speaker cables or similarly “danceable” wires. Denon mitigates this nonsense by using decent materials inside — “high purity copper wire” for instance — but this is a cable for digital signals, people. Sure, a badly made Cat 5 will pick up interference, but it would have to be made from steel wool and gaffer tape to cause a problem in a 1.5 meter (59″) length, which is the size of the AK-DL1.

One final insult to your intelligence: The cables have arrows on them to “indicate correct direction for connecting cable”. Perhaps so the pampered electrons don’t get lost on their way.
